A Brief History Of Farmington:
Farmingto is situated in the Northwest corner of New Mexico and is the largest town in the Four Corners area. The Navajos call it Totah, the meeting place of the waters. William Hendrickson led a small party of pioneers from Animas City, Colorado in 1876 to this well situated spot where the LaPlata, Animas and San Juan Rivers come together.
The name Farmington, later shortened, was an obvious selection as homesteaders built a flourishing farm and ranch economy and the town was incorporated in 1901.
The population was less than 4,000 until 1950 and still four-fifths rural. Farmington was known mainly for its fruit crops and extensive cattle and sheep raising. When large scale oil and gas field development began in the 1950s, rapid expansion occured. The small farming community of Farmington grew by 736 percent in a decade and changed almost overnight into an energy boom town.
Farmington is still the center of the Four Corners oil, gas, coal and power generating industries today. It is also the regional center for many cultural events. The Navajo Reservation borders Farmington at its west and southwest limits and also contributes culturally and economically to the community. Ancient Indian ruins and breathtaking scenery are minutes away, and the area offers unlimited recreational activities to explore.
The staff of Los Hermanitos would like to Welcome you to Farmington and hope that you enjoy your stay.
